APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – City leaders in Appleton have delayed a vote on increasing the room tax to pay for a new exhibition center.
Appleton, along with 8 other communities, are working together to construct a new downtown exhibition center. Cost is estimated to be between $21 and $35 million.
The Appleton Common Council was asked to approve creation of a new, regional room tax commission and a range for a tax increase. Depending on how much the building costs and if a refinancing of PAC debt is included, that range could be 2.2% to 4.5%.
On Wednesday, Appleton Mayor Tim Hanna asked for a delay in order to fine-tune part of the proposal. The council agreed.
The room tax commission would set the actual increase once approved by Appleton’s council and the other 8 communities.
Backers hope the other municipalities approve the pact by the end of next month. Current room taxes are 5% or 6% in the area.
