OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Seven people are displaced after unattended cooking sparked a duplex fire in Oshkosh.
Multiple crews responded to the duplex at 1024 Greenwood Ct. just before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Upon arrival, heavy fire was seen in the kitchen and dining room area of the residence.
The fire was quickly extinguished but not before causing extensive damage and killing two pet cats.
The displaced residents are being assisted by the Red Cross.
One firefighter received a minor injury due to icy conditions.
Firefighters note there were no working smoke alarms in the building. This allowed the fire to spread quickly before it was discovered.
Officials say you should always stay in the kitchen if you have something on the stove and make sure you have working smoke detectors on each level of your home.
