APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – A scholarship fund at Lawrence University in Appleton has exceeded $50 million, and officials say the donations rolled in much faster than expected.
An anonymous donor provided $25 million for scholarships to students with financial needs — with a challenge that donors match the amount of the gift.
Lawrence vice president Cal Husmann says the private school thought it would take 5 years to match the giant gift, but it only took less than 15 months from the time it was first announced.
The campaign ended with 48 new students getting scholarships.
Lawrence says about 425 gifts were presented, more than half for $500 or less. Seven gifts exceeded $1 million.
Lawrence University has about 1,500 students. Almost 70 percent of them are getting need-based grants this year.
