ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A suspicious package found in front of the Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena sparked an investigation Thursday night.
Brown County deputies say there was a suitcase at the base of the memorial across from the arena.
Police dogs picked up some kind of scent when searching the suitcase, prompting officials to call in the bomb squad.
While the bomb squad was looking at the suitcase, a man came forward to claim the suitcase.
Authorities found a shell casing attached to a keychain in the suitcase.
Deputies are interviewing the man, but describe the situation seems as an “innocent mistake” and expect no criminal charges against him.
People were asked to avoid the areas of Lombardi Avenue, Armed Forces Drive, Oneida Street, and Holmgren Way during the incident.
Drivers parked nearby were asked to stay in their vehicles until the area could be cleared.
The Green Bay Gamblers game went on as scheduled at the Resch Center, although some fans weren’t allowed in while officials were investigating.
The Gamblers posted on Facebook saying fans who had not made it to the game yet should stay home.
The team says you can redeem your tickets for a future game given the circumstances. Activities after the game were also canceled.
