BRUSSELS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Door County community came together to help four families displaced by a fire.
The fire happened in the Town of Union Sunday night.
The Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department says it started in the basement of the building, which was divided into multiple apartments.
It took crews 10 hours to put the fire out and afterwards the building was destroyed.
On Friday, the community held an event to give those families the Christmas they had hoped for.
Curt Vandertie is the BUG Fire Chief. He spoke to WLUK.
“It makes me very proud of the community, very proud of the employers that helped support our community”
With the help of the community, the department raised about $10,000. That money was used to buy gifts and essentials for the families.
“My kids can actually have Christmas. I was so worried with everything burned,” said Julie Nordvall, one of the fire victims.
“It’s just unbelievable how much people care and how much they are willing to give and help,” added Howard Hamilton, another fire victim.
Kayla Borley, Brandon Heigl, and their son Daniel are also thankful for the community’s support.
“Without them, he’d still be in the same clothes he had, because we had nothing and I can’t express my gratitude to the community enough,” said Kayla Borley.
The families say while this is a difficult time, the support from the community will help them get back on their feet.
