APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – A car stuck on tracks in downtown Appleton was hit by a train Tuesday, causing traffic to be backed-up for over an hour.
Authorities say it happened around 11:05 a.m. at the intersection of College Avenue and Richmond Street.
Police say a vehicle crashed into a car, pushing that car up onto the median and hitting a fence. The first vehicle left the scene, while the struck car was partially over the railroad tracks and stuck on a snowbank.
As soon as officers arrived, they notified the railroad and had a tow truck respond. The driver of the car sat in a squad car for safety.
According to police, a CN railroad train had not received the notification of the accident and hit the vehicle.
The train was going about 20 miles per hour and tried to stop before hitting the car, but could not.
