MANAWA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A fishing competition in Manawa will benefit Veterans Freedom Park. The sixth annual Fishing for Freedom Fisheree is Saturday.
“We do have prizes for the largest fish of five different categories: perch, bluegill, bass, northern and crappie,” said John Smith, Manawa Area Veterans Freedom Park.
Manawa Area Veterans Freedom Park committee members say inside the nearby pavilion, preparations are underway for the annual fisheree and fundraiser.
“We have burgers and brats, plenty of food, some soda, water, adult beverages,” said Smith.
There’s a soup cookoff too.
“I like the food part. The soup competition, we’ve done that every year, and we get probably 20-25 Nescos of soup and judge the contest,” said Debbie Sarna, Manawa Area Veterans Freedom Park Committee secretary.
A typical fisheree can attract about a thousand people to the area. Officials say money raised here will go toward making improvements to the park.
On the western shoreline, a memorial dedicated five years ago salutes veterans killed and missing in action. Organizers say building a bridge connecting the pavilion and the memorial would symbolize the bond between family and the military. Paving the parking lot and constructing walls to recognize donors would complete the Manawa Area Veterans Freedom Park.
“It helps to make families make their children aware these are sacrifices that were made on our behalf, and we wouldn’t be here if these guys and men and women didn’t serve,” said Sarna.
