MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A mother and grandmother were arrested on possible child abuse charges for allegedly not getting a child the immediate medical care needed, putting the girl’s life in danger.
The women, ages 23 and 53, were arrested Friday on charges of neglecting a child causing great bodily harm, according to a probable cause statement by Manitowoc Police.
No charges have been filed. With the court closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, an initial court appearance is expected Tuesday afternoon.
According to the probable cause statement, the child – whose age is not given but is an unspecified number of weeks old – had less than a 1% chance to live. Manitowoc Police did not have a condition update Monday, when asked by FOX 11.
Police were called to Aurora Medical Center on Wednesday for a child maltreatment case. While many of the details are redacted on the public version of the report, the incidents could have happened 1-3 days before, a doctor told police.
According to the probable cause statement, the grandmother fed the child about 3 p.m. Tuesday. That night, another bottle was made about midnight. From the 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. Wednesday, the child never woke. At about 5:30 a.m., the grandmother noted the child had not eaten since the previous day. By noon, the child’s diaper was still dry, and had not eaten since the previous afternoon. They then took the child to the hospital about 3 p.m.
On Friday, a doctor told police they were still trying to figure out how to treat the child, the statement says.
Specific details of the illness, the child’s weight, injuries or illnesses, and other details are redacted from the report.
The mother said when the child was born, she and the baby both tested positive for cocaine.
