HOWARD, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – For those looking for some outdoors activities, fishing may be an answer.
And a license isn’t needed Jan. 15-16 for the Department of Natural Resources’ annual free fishing weekend.
At the Duck Creek Boat Landing in Howard, fishing friends head onto the frozen surface Thursday morning, in search of that perfect spot.
“We’re going to try getting after some perch. That seems to be everybody’s favorite, and you hear they are biting here and there,” said Ryan Klimek, Green Bay.
Dozens of portable shacks line the horizon off the landing at Lineville Road nearby. A Wisconsin resident annual fishing license is $20, but on Saturday and Sunday, anglers fish for free.
“It’s a great chance for people to get out, give it a try. If they like it, they can go buy their license, and continue through the rest of the ice fishing season. If not, no out-of-pocket expense needed,” said Darren Kuhn, DNR Conservation Warden.
Kuhn tells FOX 11 anglers need to be careful while traveling on the ice.
“Even though we’re getting closer to February, and we’ve had some really cold weather, it doesn’t mean everything is frozen solid. So just be aware, check the ice frequently with your auger if you’re not familiar with where you’re going. And remember, there’s no such thing as safe ice.”
Meanwhile, Klimek says he’ll be careful, and may even return to the favorite spot, this weekend.
The DNR reminds people while fishing is free this weekend, all the rules, and regulations remain in place.
