(WNFL)- Green Bay Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy says more starters will do double-duty on special teams this fall. He told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis that a growing number of starters were used to cover punts and kickoffs last year and that trend will continue. As McCarthy put it, “We need to adjust our special teams philosophy. Special teams need to be an asset, not something that we use as a stepping-stone offense or defense.” McCarthy fired special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum and promoted assistant Ron Zook to that spot. They also cut special teams’ stalwart Brandon Bostick, and brought in put Cody Mandell to compete with Tim Masthay. Also, McCarthy made it clear that he wants defensive end Letroy Guion back, despite his arrest on marijuana and gun charges in his home town of Starke Florida. Guion will become a free agent next month, after having 3.5 sacks with Green Bay a year ago. McCarthy he has spoken with Guion a number of times and he has accepted full responsibility for what happened.
