GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — As students return from their winter break, the administration team at Green Bay Area Public Schools has sent out some reminders for families regarding the district’s COVID-19 protocols.
While the general CDC guidelines have changed quarantine periods to five days, Green Bay Schools Superintendent Stephen Murley says they haven’t changed school protocols just yet. That’s why a reminder was sent out.
“They weren’t changing school protocols at the time. We’ve been told they may revisit that this week, so we’re in this holding pattern waiting to see what happens,” Murley said. “We wanted to make sure that, more than anything else, people knew that the board already reviewed this and had taken action in December to revise our protocols, and just to remind people what they were…Hopefully it’s a way to alleviate some of the confusion the new CDC guidelines might’ve generated.”
Murley is hoping a decision specifically targeting schools will be made this week.
“We’re hoping that the CDC is actually going to take a look at the guidelines to determine what works for the general public, and then come back and share how they see that applying to schools. We’re hoping to get something from them here maybe as early as this week,” Murley told WTAQ News. “If that’s the case, we’re prepared to go in front of the board as early as next Monday to have a conversation on what those [protocols] look like.”
The week just before winter break, the district had about sixty people out between quarantines and isolations. As of Monday, that number was closing in on 175.
The reminders are about Covid-19 isolation and quarantine procedures, as well as steps to take if a student or staff member tests positive.
“Dear GBAPS Families and Staff:
As students and staff prepare to return to school tomorrow, Monday, January 3, we want to share the following reminders:
At this time the District will continue with our 10-day isolation period and the revised quarantine protocols implemented on December 14, 2021.
If staff or students are ill, we ask that they stay home and get tested if they have COVID-19 symptoms.
If staff or students have tested positive for COVID-19 over Winter Recess, please complete the COVID-19 Symptom Screener or contact the school nurse. Staff should contact Heidi Neverman at hlneverman@gbaps.org
The District is aware of the changes to CDC’s guidelines for isolation timelines for COVID-19 that were released during Winter Recess for the general public. Please be aware that the CDC did not revise the 10 day isolation timelines for COVID-19 in the school setting. The District will continue to review the recommendations from the CDC and Wisconsin Department of Health (DHS).
GBAPS Administration”
