TOWN OF WEST KEWAUNEE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – From a track-powered groomer to the snow-making machines on the slopes nearby, the sights and sounds of the season are in the air at Winter Park, near Kewaunee.
“It’s exciting getting ready. We start getting those cold nights, and start getting the snow guns out, and getting everything ready,” said Dave Myers, Kewaunee County Promotions & Recreation director. “We’re always checking the weather.”
Myers tells FOX 11 the recent warm-up melted snow and delayed work here by about a week. But in the days since, he says overnight temperatures dropped enough to make snow again.
“If we’re in the very low 20s, or teens, that’s pretty good weather for us. Or even colder obviously.”
Winter Park features skiing, snowboarding, and a dedicated snow tubing hill scheduled to open next Tuesday. The 500-foot run is equipped with a popular mechanical lift called the Magic Carpet.
Kewaunee County Tourism Coordinator Jennifer Gonzalez tells FOX Winter Park draws more than 13,000 visitors from Northeast Wisconsin, and around the country.
“It’s awesome to see people from warm-weather states, because snow is not something everyone gets to experience when they live in places like Florida, or Texas, necessarily. So it’s kind of a neat thing.”
And as snow-making continues, Myers says opening early is important.
“I always like to be open the week, the holiday week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, just so the kids can come out, do something, have fun, and people can get out and enjoy it.” he said.
The skiing and snowboarding runs are expected to be ready in a couple weeks.
Depending on the weather, the season typically runs through early March.
