GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — As the shipping season enters its final weeks, the Port of Green Bay is reporting a busier 2021.
Port officials say nearly 1.8 million tons of goods have moved through the port so far this season. That’s up 9% compared to the same time last year.
Close to 220,000 tons moved through the port in November. Port leaders say there was a strong month of petroleum product shipping, as well as a large shipment of wood pulp.
“At 9,000 tons, the wood pulp shipment to KK Logistics was the largest this shipping season,” port director Dean Haen said in a news release. “That’s good to see along with the continuing good import numbers for limestone, foreign petroleum products and cement. We’ve also seen an increase in newer commodities like carbon anodes and ash. With just a few weeks to a month remaining in the shipping season, we should be able to get very close to our annual target of moving 2 million tons of commodities through the Port.”
Compared to 2020:
- Domestic limestone is up 18% (521,000 tons)
- Cement imports are up 3% (386,000 tons)
- Imports of foreign petroleum products are up 2,778% (190,000 tons)
Overall, 161 ships have visited the port, up from 143 as of the same time in 2020.
The shipping season generally continues into January until Lake Michigan and Green Bay freeze over.
