OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An exchange program in Oshkosh is making a difference for older adults in the community.
The Oshkosh Fire Department kicked off its new “Mugs for Rugs” program Monday as a way to prevent adults 65 and older from falling at home.
The department says it has seen an escalation of EMS calls that are related to falls, most often occurring inside a home bathroom or bedroom.
Throw rugs contribute to many of these falls, officials say.
“As our population ages, it’s critical for us to find ways to improve the health of our holder adults and their ability to remain independent,” said Oshkosh Fire Chief Mike Stanley.
The “Mugs for Rugs” program encourages people to turn in their throw rugs (4 x 6 feet or smaller) into participating coffee shops in exchange for one free mug. The coffee shop will then fill the mug for free, each time the customer visits.
The initiative received a $1,000 grant from the Ladies Benevolent Society of Oshkosh and the mugs were donated by 4imprint.
Local business partners include Caramel Crisp Corner, Mike’s Place Family Restaurant, New Moon Cafe, Pilora’s Cafe and Planet Perk Coffee Houses.
The Oshkosh Seniors Center is also participating.
