GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Green Bay school board president, Eric Vanden Heuvel, says he will not seek a second term.
In a statement released today (Tuesday), Vanden Heuvel cited personal and professional challenges that require more of his time:
“It has been a tremendous pleasure to serve my community and the Green Bay Area Public School District (GBAPS) for the past three years. I have made the difficult decision to not seek a second term due to personal and professional challenges that require more of my time. I am honored to have led the school district during a period of significant change, including the hiring of a new superintendent, the opening of the District’s Welcome Center, the repurposing of Jefferson Elementary into a Head Start Learning Center, and the addition of the GBAPS Online School 4K-5.
My time on the Board of Education was certainly eventful, but I am proud of everything we achieved. I want to thank the District staff and my fellow board members for their dedication to GBAPS students, staff and families. GBAPS is well positioned for future success, and I look forward to being a champion of the District for years to come.”
The decision not to run for re-election comes less than a month after Vanden Heuvel deactivated his social media accounts due to safety concerns. It stemmed from a Facebook post that called out Vanden Heuvel and other officials responsible for mask mandates. The post included pictures of Vanden Heuvel, unmasked at outdoor sporting events with his family and his contact information.
The Green Bay district requires students in grades 3K-6, staff, visitors and contractors to wear masks while inside buildings. Masks are optional for older students.
Van Den Heuvel was elected to the board of education in 2019 and began serving as board president in 2020. His term will end in April 2022.
