GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Wisconsinites will be setting their clocks back one hour on Saturday night, and the Green Bay Metro Fire Department wants to use that time to remind you to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
“We use that time frame because it’s a really good one,” said Green Bay Metro Fire Department’s Shauna Walesh. “Because you’re already taking the time to switch your clocks over, it’s really good time to make sure you change the batteries.”
Walesh says the simple maintenance can save your life.
“That is your lifeline,” Walesh told WTAQ. “You’re typically not going to wake up in the event of a fire. If anything, the smoke will get to you before the fire.”
Not only should you switch the batteries, you should also check the expiration dates.
“It doesn’t take too long to do it, and it’s a good chance to to make sure that your smoke alarms aren’t expired,” said Walesh. “Typically smoke alarms last about 10 years and then they expire you need to replace them.”
It’s also a good time, fire officials say, to go over you and your family’s emergency plans.
