MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A crane built in Manitowoc is the winner of this year’s “Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin” contest.
Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce and Johnson Financial Group revealed Thursday the 140 Ton Navy Crane from Broadwind Heavy Fabrications won the competition.
“Broadwind Heavy Fabrications is extremely honored to have won The Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin award for 2021,” company president Dan Schueller said in a news release. “On behalf of our great Broadwind employees we would like to say thank you to our partner customer Konecranes and all of our Wisconsin based suppliers who made this possible. We appreciate WMC and Johnson Financial Group sponsoring this contest and the excitement it brought to all of the participating companies. We look forward to participating in future contests because we believe what we manufacture in Manitowoc is essential to the Wisconsin and American economy.”
The 2.7 million-pound crane was created with support from a WisDOT Harbor Assistance grant. It was shipped on Memorial Day weekend and was to be put into service at a U.S. Navy base on the East Coast.
The other finalists were a V12 600hp Verado Outboard Engine from Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac, a Cat Electric Rope Shovel from Caterpillar Global Mining in South Milwaukee and Glazer Donuts from Kwik Trip in La Crosse.
