DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) — There’s been a renewed interest in neighborhood watch groups following a daylight attack on a woman Tuesday on the East River Trail in De Pere.
De Pere Police Community Liason Officer Jedd Bradley says there are already a lot of Neighborhood Watch groups in the city.
“We’re well over 40,” he told WTAQ on Friday. “It fluctuates a bit, but right now I’d say we have about 40+ neighborhood watch groups throughout the city.”
Bradley says the police department works closely with those groups and will help interested people set them up or get in contact with one locally.
“Being a part of a neighborhood watch is as easy as being a neighbor,” said Bradley. “It’s knowing that your neighbor down the street works night shift and doesn’t come home until six in the morning, it’s knowing that the Johnson’s are on vacation, and the front light is on, and the niece is watching the house.”
Neighborhood watch groups, Bradley says, are a resource for police, too, as watchful neighbors are often the first people police approach when a crime occurs.
Police have offered no new information about Tuesday’s attack since an initial press conference hours after the attack occurred. On Thursday, Mayor James Boyd said police are working hard on the case.
