GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Over a dozen law enforcement officers from across Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are in Green Bay this week, undergoing SWAT training at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.
Current and future special tactics officers from across the region are sitting in classrooms at NWTC, but that’s not all they’re doing. Public Safety Training Coordinator Jason Weber says there’s a huge hands-on element.
“There are scenarios where the officers go hands-on with entering rooms, encountering suspects,” Weber said Monday. “Classroom work is important, but this is pretty hands-on.”
Trainees will, during the twice-a-year SWAT school, breach doors, learn crisis communication methods, familiarize themselves with now equipment, and receive special firearms training.
The 13 officers taking part in this week’s training are among the thousands who attend Public Safety Training programs at NWTC.
“Annually, we train over 4,000 police officers, firefighters, and EMT’s every year,” said Weber. “That’s in a wide variety of topics.”
Weber says the program at NWTC has gained a reputation as one of the best in the state and provides a $650,000 annual impact on the regional economy.
