MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Manitowoc Public School District is starting school on Monday.
“I am extremely excited, I know that our teachers and all the rest of our staff are excited as well,” said See Lee Vang, principal of Franklin Elementary School.
This is Vang’s second year as the school principal. Because of the pandemic, Monday is the first time she’s welcomed students for the first day, in-person.
Nicole Love says kids Braxtyn and Madysen Dietrich are excited to go back to class.
“Madysen has been waiting to come back to school and they are hoping for a full year, all day, right,” said Love.
The 2021-2022 school year isn’t as traditional as pre-pandemic times. Masks are required for students and staff.
Superintendent Mark Holzman says they are focusing on more than just COVID-19 protocols.
Holzman says the district wants to make this school year as normal as possible.
“We’re going to have regular class sizes, we’re going to take our masks off while we’re outside, we’re going to have regular art, physical education and music transitions,” said Holzman.
“Has it been easier for the district to make those decisions to get a little bit back to normal?” asked FOX 11.
“Yes, we take very much of the information from our local health professional to be able to make decisions on how to come back, but we’ve been going through this through a period of time,” replied Holzman.
Holzman says the Manitowoc Public School District will constantly re-evaluate COVID-19 protocols to keep students and staff safe this school year.
