GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Will COVID-19 ever go away? One local expert is saying: probably not.
Bellin Health Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Michael Landrum says it’s likely that COVID-19 will never actually be eradicated.
“It’s likely that there will always be some degree of [COVID-19],” Landrum said, answering a question posed by WTAQ during a Wednesday press conference. “In some way, shape or form, SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, will be with us for the long term.”
The virus can spread even between vaccinated people, but it can also spread between humans and animals, meaning the virus will likely continue to mutate.
“People have speculated that it might turn into a seasonal coronavirus, like the ones we have that cause the common cold in the fall and winter,” Landrum said. “But that remains to be seen.”
It isn’t changing any of his recommendations, though.
“If we got vaccine protection and population immunity up to a high enough level, and there are also some developed therapeutics, then I do think life would feel pretty much back to normal,” Landrum added.
Landrum’s comments came during a Wednesday press conference.
