GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A former Bellevue village clerk who stole from public accounts was sentenced to nine months in jail.
Dawn Kreuser, 56, was convicted of theft in a business setting and misconduct in public office. She was also placed on probation for three years and ordered to perform 150 hours of community service during the Aug. 12 sentencing, court records show.
Kreuser was the clerk for the municipal court, who was “let go” by the village in August, 2019. The new clerk then started reviewing the records, according to the complaint.
There were discrepancies in how citations were accounted for, recorded or paid. The new clerk estimated that possibly $15,320.05 was missing, although police calculations were closer to $4,400. The complaint details more than two dozen examples of people who provided copies of receipts for payments but the village did not have the money.
Kreuser admitted she took the money, saying she needed it to pay for her prescriptions.
“I am very embarrassed by my behavior. I have never done anything like this before. I wish I never would have started stealing money from the Village of Bellevue Court. I know it is wrong and I am very sorry. I would be willing to pay the Village back. The Village did not give me permission to take this money. The reason I did this is because I needed money for my prescriptions. I had money, it wasn’t that I necessarily needed it but it was an impulse and I’m not sure why I did it and I know it was wrong,” the complaint quotes her as telling police.
