APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Hearthstone Historic House Museum in Appleton has completed a two-year-long full exterior restoration project.
George Schroeder, the executive director of Hearthstone Historic House Museum, says that there was a need for change.
“It was quite obvious that we needed a new roof, the chimneys needed to be rebuilt, we’re literally losing bricks out of the chimneys,” said Schroeder. “It was time to tackle all of these big problems cause they’re not going to get any better.”
Schroeder also says that credit is due to the artisans.
“You know, you just can’t (get) anyone working on a historic structure like this. Everyone we hire has to understand what a requirement that is and work within it.”
Looking at it now, everyone involved in the restoration is thrilled with how the project turned out.
“It feels pretty good. I mean, to have this under our belt, to accomplish this, to be able to talk to everyone who made this happen,” said Schroeder. “All of our donors, our members, our staff, our board, our artisans and to be able to show them the completed project, is really worth it all.”
The Hearthstone House, built in 1882, was the first house in the world that had an Edison central hydroelectric power station.
