ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Beer vendors walking the stands at Lambeau Field are no more.
It’s a consequence of the Packer’s move to all-cashless transactions.
“We are transitioning away from vendors walking through the stands and replacing them with more portable stands just inside the concourses,” said Packers’ spokesmen Aaron Popkey, explaining the impact of transitioning to cashless operations at the stadium.
It reminds Al Hale of a time when he couldn’t walk the stands, and see the fans of his own.
“I wasn’t in the aisle after the last four years or so,” said Hale, remembering his last years as a vendor. “I was downstairs… I didn’t want to quit because then I couldn’t get up and see these people.”
Hale has spent 45 years selling beer at Lambeau.
Popkey says going cashless is an effort to be more efficient, than being related to COVID-19 protocols like some may think.
“This way people can get to the concourse get to a concession stand and get back to their seat,” he told FOX 11. “The vast majority of the people at the game do make a trip to a concession stand or a portable vendor to make their purchase.”
Popkey adds the transition has been in the works for years– although cashless operations gained attention during the height of the pandemic.
So, as preps get underway for Saturday night’s preseason opener, the absence of beer vendors manning these stands is a difference fans are sure to notice.
