OCONTO FALLS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An Oconto Falls police officer is reportedly in stable condition at a Green Bay hospital after being shot on Friday morning.
Oconto County sheriff’s officials say officers responded to the area of Pine Street around 10:30am, but it wasn’t exactly clear what they were going into after receiving several 911 hang-up calls.
“We believe it was a suspicious activity or kidnapping-type incident, is what it came in as. And that’s what the officer was prepared to respond to,” said Sheriff Todd Skarban. “Upon arrival, the Oconto Falls police officer made contact with the caller. The Oconto County dispatch center was then notified of the officer sustaining a gunshot wound.”
A 29-year-old woman was arrested on a referred charge of first degree attempted homicide.
Skarban says he hasn’t experienced anything like this in his career – or even in his lifetime, being from the area.
“When you’re in the fight, we win the fight. And that’s what we train to do. You’re going to go home to your family, that’s the goal. And thankfully this officer has been reunited with their family and is resting comfortably,” Skarban said. “The support that we receive from our community is second to none. Across the country, you hear law enforcement agencies being vilified and the like. We don’t experience that in Oconto County.”
A criminal complaint detailing more information about the incident is expected to be released early next week.
