OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) — The world’s busiest airport is–for now–right here in Northeast Wisconsin.
Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh handles more traffic, at times, during EAA AirVenture than Chicago O’Hare or Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson.
“EAA AirVenture is the Super Bowl of Air Traffic Control… Oshkosh during that whole week gets close to the eight day period for Chicago O’Hare and Atlanta,” said Tony Molinaro with the Federal Aviation Administration. “There are days, however, where it surpasses both of those airports.”
That requires veteran Air Traffic Controllers ready for a unique opportunity.
“The ones that come, they come from all over the Midwest,” said Molinaro. “They come from different airport towers, and they bid to work at Oshkosh. We really do mean work.”
Planes land, at peak times, at a rate of one plane every 15 seconds at the airport during AirVenture.
