GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Business and health leaders are preparing for a new debate over masks. It comes as White House officials are discussing new mask recommendations.
Green Bay resident Melissa Shefchek isn’t a fan of mask mandates.
“I know that we’re trying to protect others,” said Marissa Shefcheck. “But at the same time I think there should be some choice because it is your own medical decision to make.”
The Green Bay woman isn’t the only one who feels that way about mandating masks, and there are several other takes in between.
However, Dr. Brad Burmeister with Bellin Health says to prevent future shutdowns or even the creation of a variant that is resistant to the vaccine, masking up despite vaccination status could be the way.
“We know that the vaccine so far is thankfully effective against the variants that are currently spreading,” said Dr.Burmeister. “There might be a point in the future where that might not be the case.”
“The vaccine is really effective at all those outcome measure that you had mentioned,” he answered. “First, it can be helpful at preventing from getting COVID-19 in the first place. If, though, you’re one of those rare or infrequent cases where you do get COVID despite your vaccination status the vaccine can also confer or give you partial immunity.”
And from the business angle…
“There’s so much unknown,” said Kayla Viste.
She and Mike Hastreichter own Kavarna Coffee.
The downtown business just recently opened its doors to dine-in.
Hastreichter says navigating new guidance can get tricky.
“In terms of every business having to make a decision on how they operate then,” he explained.
Right now though, it’s a waiting game, it’s unclear if and when new guidance will come out.
