OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Northeast Wisconsin’s first community-owned grocery store opened its doors Thursday.
The Oshkosh Food Co-op on Jackson Street was created to bring fresh, locally-sourced foods to the area, which has been designated by the US Department of Agriculture as a food desert. The store will target 20% of its sales from locally-sourced goods from growers, producers, and farmers within 100 miles or the state of Wisconsin.
The co-op is eight years in the making, started by a UW-Oshkosh student in 2013.
Today, the Oshkosh Co-Op is owned by more than 1,650 member-owners.
The store features two seating areas and will be the first food co-op in the nation to offer a Chatty Checkout, a lane where the cashier makes time for chit chat with the customer.
The store will add 30 jobs to the local economy.
