MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — The seven day average of new COVID-19 cases is twice that of two weeks ago.
The current seven day average is 242 cases per day. Hospitalizations are up, too.
“Over the past two weeks we have seen Wisconsin hospitalizations rise from 74 people with COVID, to 143,” said Deputy DHS Secretary Julie Willems Van Dijk. “That’s almost double.”
State health officials say the rise is fueled by the more-infectious Delta variant of the virus.
The seven day average of new deaths remains at one.
“I am not sharing these numbers with the intent to scare you,” said Willems Van Dijk. “I’m sharing them so you have accurate information so you can make important decisions.”
Willems Van Dijk urges people to get vaccinated.
“How many cases of polio do you see day to day? How many cases of measles do you see day to day? How many cases of diphtheria do you see day to day?” asked Willems, refering to diseases that have been nearly eliminated due to vaccination programs.
51.3% of the state’s population has received at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 48.9% have completed the vaccine series.
