GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — There is a serious shortage of school bus drivers throughout the entire country, and Green Bay isn’t immune.
Cindi Lawler with Lamers Bus Service says the issue has actually be going on for a few years, but COVID-19 made things particularly bad, and they’ve had to take steps to ensure bus routes are covered.
“Usually we have some days of the week that are slower for the motor coach drives, so some of those help with school bus driving,” said Lawler. “Our office staff and our shop staff are also licensed.”
Bus driving, Lawler says, is a great part-time job that pays well.
“I think part of it is a perception problem, it’s not like something you go to school for. Some people are just simply uninformed about the job,” Lawler told WTAQ. “A lot of people are afraid of driving the vehicle because it’s a big vehicle, and think it’s going to be difficult. But with automatic transmissions, power steering, it’s like driving a big car.”
Lawler says the job pays better than other comparable part-time positions.
