GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — It could be weeks before the Mason Street Bridge reopens to traffic after a serious mechanical failure caused the bridge to become stuck open on Tuesday night.
There is no timeline for when the bridge might be repaired. Green Bay Public Works Director Steve Grenier says it’s going to cause a few traffic headaches.
“Anytime that we have one of the downtown lift bridges out of service for any reason it creates stress on the other two,” said Grenier. “We have a standing detour that we can implement at a moment’s notice.”
The detour is easy enough to implement. Smart traffic signals downtown and around the bridge can accommodate the increased traffic.
“The signals monitor the traffic and adapt,” Grenier told WTAQ. “They have the ability to extend the green lights and accommodate the extra flow.”
Grenier says the five bridges in Green Bay have been closed for an extended period of time before.
“While not usual, it’s also not unprecedented,” said Grenier.
Drivers can use either the Walnut Street, Main Street, Leo Frigo and Highway 172 bridges if needing to cross the river.
