GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Travelers are expected to fly more this coming holiday weekend than at any point in the past year and a half.
That’s not normal for Independence Day weekend, but Green Bay Austin Straubel Airport Director Marty Piette says pent-up demand is driving a huge uptick in air travel during a usually auto-centric holiday.
“I think it’s going to be busier than most holidays that we had seen in 2019 and earlier,” Piette told WTAQ. “Just because of that pent up demand.”
One survey, from the Vacationer, reports that 51% of Americans plan to travel this weekend. Some states may even break their 4th of July travel records.
“Easter was a busy flying holiday, Memorial day weekend was a busy flying holiday,” explained Piette. “We expected the same for July 4th.”
Piette reminds travelers that mask mandates are still in effect in airports and on planes and that many airport amenities are still closed–so pack snacks to take along with you and ways to entertain yourself.
