APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – One of Appleton’s elementary schools will have a new name.
The district board of education decided Monday night to rename Lincoln Elementary. It will be known as Ronald C. Dunlap Elementary School, home of the Lincoln Lions.
Ron Dunlap served as principal of Lincoln Elementary for 16 years. He was also known as a leader of the Fox Valley’s Black community.
He died in 2019 at the age of 72.
“Of our schools, 17 have been renamed after famous figures; one a Hispanic, the remaining 16 all White, male or female, yet the demographic of our district does not fit that at all,” said James Bowman, treasurer. “I wouldn’t wil nily go around changing schools just because of that, but Ron Dunlap is special, and he had a special connection to one school, and I think we saw that in the response, the survey response from people in the Lincoln area.”
The decision was made with a vote of 4-3. The vote came after the board released a survey to Appleton residents to hear their thoughts on the issue.
