WINNECONNE, WI (WTAQ) – A Winneconne man has broken the world-record for most push-ups in a year.
Nate Carroll has done over 1.5 million push-ups over the past year. Now he’s waiting for a confirmation from the Guinness Book of World Records.
“I’ve been doing push ups for a long time…You have to do push ups all day long. I work full time, I’m a dad, and it’s impossible to verify every single push up. I think I have verified a good number, and I hope that it will be enough to persuade them to validate the record,” Carroll told the WTAQ Morning News with Matt and Earl. “With the volume of 4,000-plus push-ups a day, you can’t record every one of them. So I recorded them all my log book, I’ll have letters of verification and videos of the push-ups that I did throughout the year. That will get submitted, and from that, they’ll make a determination.”
Now, 4,000 push-ups in a day averages out to about 167 per hour. Some hours had more, others had none. So what was his training regiment like?
“You have to get up early and hit the floor often. So for me, it was about integrating push ups into every aspect of my day…My day started at 3:45 in the morning. I slept in 5 times I counted over the past 365 days of the challenge. [I had to] have a balanced approach and be driven,” Carroll said.
Nothing would stop him either. At one point, he came into contact with a friend who tested positive for COVID-19. So he had to get tested.
“I would move my car up, then get out and do push-ups. Somebody filmed it and sent it out like ‘there’s some strange guy doing push ups in the COVID line’ – so that was probably the strangest place, at the expo center while I was waiting to get COVID tested,” Carroll said.
But what’s the goal here? Why put yourself through such a routine? It started with a challenge to raise money for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
“It was really important that we support our first responders and take care of them. So it was a challenge that came about trying to honor those who serve our community,” Carroll explained. “The push ups obviously is a special number, but really the dollars that go to those families – that’s much more important to me than any number of push ups that I did.”
He officially passed the record during a charity football game between the New York Police and New York Fire Departments at MetLife Stadium. He believes the people who donated during the challenge have maintained their $11-per-month commitment, which means his effort has raised nearly $50,000.
Carroll’s next fitness goal is to run the Fox Cities Marathon in reverse, then forwards – that’s about 52 and a half miles – with a 100-pound pack.
