BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – At Kimps Ace Hardware in Howard, Fathers Day typically ignites grill sales.
That’s according to Beth Coel, a grill master at the store.
“The numbers are really up this year and yesterday we had a banner day on Fathers Day sales. Grills were going out of here pretty fast yesterday and now today they’re coming in, the fathers are coming in with their gift cards and buying their accessories.”
She tells FOX 11 the spike in sales doesn’t stop there.
“COVID probably tipped that off last year with everyone being home so people are finding out that you can do restaurant quality food at your own home.”
When it comes to grill safety, De Pere Fire and Rescue says there’s a few things you should know before firing up a grill.
“Just making sure that you’re grilling on an approved grill instead of having something that’s homemade or whatever, maybe it doesn’t have the certain safety features built into it like a commercially-made grill.
De Pere Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Luke Pasterski tells FOX 11 the grill should also be clean and kept away from kids and pets at all times.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, on average, over 10,000 home fires a year are started by grills, with July being the peak month for grill fires.
“There are times that we have calls where grills get out of control, basically they weren’t cleaned properly and maybe grease or something starts on fire, or someone forgets about it and then the food gets overcooked and starts on fire and we get calls, which creates a safety hazard because when it flares up it could start the side of the house or a deck or something that’s close to it on fire,” Pasterski said.
With safety in mind, Coel calls grilling a great outdoor activity.
The National Fire Protection Association says about half of injuries involving grills are thermal burns.
