GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Starting next week, high schools in Green Bay will be mask-optional.
The Green Bay Area Public School District board came to that decision in a unanimous vote Monday afternoon.
Masks will still be required for grades PreK through 8th.
The motion passed Monday also allows the district to immediately end all mask mandates if and when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ends their mask recommendations for schools.
The decision means that in-person summer school high school students will be able to choose whether or not to wear a mask.
The full text of the motion is as follows:
That effective June 14, 2021, face coverings for students, staff, visitors, and contractors shall be: (1) optional when outside; (2) required for Grades 3K-8 when inside District buildings; (3) strongly recommended but not required on District premises for all individuals in buildings for Grades 9 through 16; (4) required in buildings that include elementary and/or middle with high school grades; (5) for District provided transportation, worn in accordance with federal requirements; and (6) for WIAA events, worn in accordance with WIAA requirements; and that should COVID-19 infection rates reach 1% for the District student and staff population over 5 consecutive days, face coverings would be required and remain in effect until the District student and staff population infection rate falls below 0.2%, and that if the CDC alters their recommendation of requiring masks in schools and the District infection rate is below 1%, mask requirements will be lifted in accordance with the revised CDC recommendations, as presented be approved.
