GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — June is officially the start of severe weather season in Wisconsin.
National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist Kurt Kotenberg says severe weather safety starts early in the day.
“When you’re waking up each morning, take 60 seconds to look at the weather forecast,” Kotenberg told WTAQ. “Just be aware; are there thunderstorms? How strong will it be? When will they arrive? Will it impact my day?”
NWS issues severe weather warnings when winds in excess of 60 miles per hour or one-inch hail is forecasted.
Tornados aren’t as common in Wisconsin as they are elsewhere in the midwest, but with around 20 or so a year impacting the state on average, they’re still a definite threat.
“If we issue a tornado warning, there’s something that we’re seeing that makes it seem like there’s a tornado ongoing or one will potentially be forming very imminently,” Kotenberg said. “It’s a serious threat that ought to be taken seriously.”
The severe weather season in Wisconsin starts in early June and lasts until early August.
