ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – As investigators continued to talk with witnesses to Saturday’s shooting, on Sunday. leaders of the Oneida Casino Complex addressed the shooting, focusing on ways to comfort and heal the community.
Not long after shots rang out at the Duck Creek Kitchen and Bar at the Radisson Hotel Complex, Oneida Casino Gaming General Manager Louise Cornelius says the incident is still sending shockwaves throughout the community.
“All of us at Oneida Casino are heartbroken for the community, and friends of those affected by this horrible event,” said Louise Cornelius, Gaming General Manager.
Cornelius says starting Monday morning counseling will be available for the estimated 150-200 employees who work at the complex.
Safety and security of our staff and guests has always been a top priority, and will continue to do so,” she said.
“Making sure mental health is being taken care of, and also spiritual health. We want to make sure we continue to move forward, with a balanced approach to recovery from this terrible situation,” said Tehassi Hill, Oneida Nation Chairman.
Hill says they train for incidents like the shooting, and law enforcement arrived within minutes after the call. Vice-Chairman Brandon Yellowbird- Stevens says the multi-jurisdictional response will be evaluated.
“How effective was that training? And did we follow it too? As a situation, everything changes, when you’re in the heat of the moment, So that’s the difficult part of making sure that it’s continuing to do more, in light of any possibilities of this happening again,” said Brandon Yellowbird-Stevens, Oneida Nation Vice-Chairman.
And as the investigation continues, tribal leaders say the healing is just beginning.
“We treat our community like family. And as this happens on our reservation, we treat the situation like family, like it happened to us,” said Yellowbird-Stevens.
Tribal leaders say the main casino and bingo facility near the airport will remain closed until further notice.
