APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – The wheels and optimism are going up as more travelers are taking to the skies in Appleton.
Appleton International Airport saw a 23% increase in travelers in March of 2021, compared to the same time last year.
“Very exciting. We saw a lot of family members coming back, getting out there for a fun adventure. Plus, probably 40% of business travel starting to come back, which is great news for us as well,” said Airport Director Abe Weber. “The great thing about Appleton Airport, it’s your hometown airport. We have great connectivity to the places people want to go – Florida and Arizona, Las Vegas, really great opportunities people took advantage of here.”
They’re also seeing people start to book a new flight option to Savannah, Georgia – which doesn’t take off until May 28th.
Weber says more than 57,000 travelers passed through their terminals last month. That’s comparable to pre-COVID passenger counts.
“Airlines have recognized that. So by June, we’re seeing a 20% flight increase compared to our benchmark year in 2019, which gives us great optimism that our airport is going to continue to grow,” Weber told WTAQ News.
He’s also optimistic that measures taken for safety during the pandemic are helping pump the numbers.
“It’s very refreshing because we’ve been here working diligently to create a facility that gives our customers confidence that they can travel safely,” Weber said. “All of the added clean measures and some of those things that we’ve done are really start to pay off, and it’s really exciting for us.”
