KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The city of Kaukauna is taking ownership of its sirens.
It is also drawing up a resolution to pay for them with money raised by Outagamie County’s new half-percent sales tax which takes effect next year.
The county has been trying to move away from tornado sirens for years.
Emergency management leaders have said the warnings don’t do any good because, by the time you hear them, it’s often too late to do anything.
Kaukauna’s city council agreed to start paying for maintenance and operations of the sirens at Tuesday night’s meeting.
Kaukauna’s Mayor Tony Peterman tells FOX … “Each siren replacement is about $25,000 to $27,000 so we are looking at about $100,000 to replace those sirens in the next couple of years.”
Outagamie County is asking local governments to make the change by January 2020.
