NEW LONDON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Fire overspread a campground near New London on Friday, leading to multiple explosions of propane tanks.
Firefighters say they responded to the back lot of Huckleberry Acres Campground shortly after 12:30 p.m.
When crews arrived, large amounts of heavy black smoke were seen. Firefighters also found four campers, two sheds and a pickup truck on fire.
As firefighters charged hose lines with water, a propane tank blew up. Another 20 tanks later blew up, resulting in additional explosions.
The fire was contained to the campers, sheds and truck, but at least two other campers sustained heat damage, firefighters say.
Crews also dealt with an unrelated vegetation fire at the south end of the campground. The fire was a controlled burn and not out of control, but was extinguished.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
