GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – 8th District Congressman Mike Gallagher calls it a tight balancing act when it comes to the U-S trade war with China.
The Wisconsin Republican agrees with President Trump that an aggressive stance needs to be taken to level the trade playing field. But there’s a lot of pain to go around.
“what we’re discovering is just how intertwined, and interdependent, our economy and the Chinese economy are.”
Gallagher says moving forward the best thing the United States can do is not to try and do this face-off with China alone.
“the only way we win this competition with China over the long term is if we’re on the same page as our allies and we unite the free world.”
Gallagher says in the short term, we can maintain the tariff pressure on China without baring the burden here at home. But not forever.
“You can’t sort of expect farmers in Wisconsin to pay the price for a prolonged tit-for-tat.”
As for the G7 Summit, Gallagher says there was a missed opportunity when it comes to China.
“one thing that should have been front and center at the G7 is the issue of Hong Kong. That presented a huge opportunity to push back on China’s predatory behavior.”
Gallagher is doing a district-wide tour of town halls, meetings, and events in the remaining days of the Congressional summer recess. Gallagher a guest on WTAQ’s Matt-Earl & The Morning News.
