GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Back to School means back to thinking safety when driving.
“In Green Bay, we have a problem where people just don’t stop for people in the crosswalks.”
For the first time in a few months, crosswalks areas near schools are about to be busy once again.
“We often see people roll right through the crosswalk and people need to stop and wait for traffic to go by.”
Green Bay Police Commander Kevin Warych says that means people need to change their driving habits.
“There are going to be more kids in the crosswalks and more kids standing around waiting for the school bus.”
He says drivers have rules to follow like slowing down in school zones.
“For the last three months, we have had very few kids in the crosswalks or in the streets, people need to be aware to slow down in the school zones. What is posted as 25 miles per hour is reduced down to 15 when kids are present.”
He says typically kids are not thinking about what drivers are doing but it needs to be the most important thing for drivers to pay attention to what they are doing.
He says pedestrians also need to follow rules.
“We want them to make sure that they are following directions provided by countless crossing guards throughout the city.”
Warych says crossing guards are able to report violations to police but Green Bay Police will have a strong watch on violations as school gets underway for most next week.
