GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – One area lawmaker is supporting cracking down on vaping.
4th District Representative David Steffen is backing legislation that would raise the age of vaping to 21.
He says the reasoning is to keep vaping products out of high schools.
“Most importantly is to keep it out of the schools and make it easier for clients to understand so they can keep it out of the public.”
The proposed law would link vaping and tobacco product use laws to alcohol policies.
“It should be easy for retailers and easy for the public to understand how this works.”
Steffen said the largest company that sells vaping products is backing the legislation.”It essentially makes the laws that were made for the purchase and consumption of alcohol relate to tobacco products.”Steffen said it would also make things easier to enforce, making all the products only available to 21-years or older.
Steffen says they have seen a 78 percent increase of tobacco use in high schools in the last year.
He says it is mostly e-cigarettes and vaping.
