GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The man who allegedly stabbed a Green Bay Police K9 officer will stand trial after being found competent.
30-year-old Sia Vang is charged with causing injury to a police animal.
On April 7, Police were called to a west-side home because Vang was threatening to kill his father. Vang refused to surrender, so police released Pyro to engage Vang. The dog bit Vang, Vang pulled a knife out of his waistband and stabbed Pyro.
According to family members, they told police that Vang has mental issues and has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
His attorney raised the issue of whether Vang understood the proceedings.
On Tuesday, a psychiatrist’s report determined that he was competent and will return to court on September 25 for a preliminary hearing.
Vang said “he stabbed the dog on instinct, because he is scared of dogs,” the complaint states.
