GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A year-long moratorium on utility shut-offs ends Thursday.
The Wisconsin Public Service Commission did not renew the moratorium, originally put into place at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and utility companies will soon be able to resume disconnections that were previously suspended.
If your bills are overdue, Matt Cullen with WPS says you shouldn’t worry: payment arrangements and financial assistance are available.
“Disconnection always has been and always will be a last resort,” Cullen told WTAQ. “We encourage them to contact us so that we can work with them to make every effort to assist them by providing them with a payment arrangement, or connecting them to information about financial assistance.”
The moratorium ending won’t automatically disconnect power to those with outstanding balances, but utilities will begin the process of disconnecting customers.
“There have been very challenging circumstances that many of our customers have gone through throughout the past year,” said Cullen. “That’s what those payment arrangements are designed to help our customers with.”
Cullen says less than 1% of their over 780,000 customers are at risk of disconnection.
