GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Green Bay emergency crews responded to an ammonia leak at a business on the city’s east side just before 10 a.m. Thursday morning.
Police confirmed the ammonia leak at American Foods on Acme St. was contained around noon.
Green Bay Metro Fire said it appears a valve failure caused the chemical to leak from an outside storage tank.
Employees of American Foods were evacuated and residents living in the area were asked to shelter in place for about two hours.
Firefighters found high ammonia levels throughout the plant while testing the air quality.
American Foods decided to close for the rest of the day so the building could be properly ventilated.
