NORTHEASTERN WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Three tribes in eastern Wisconsin were awarded more than $2 million to improve public safety.
The money is part of the Justice Department’s $273.4 million grant program given to 149 American Indian tribes nationwide.
The three tribes are:
- Forest County Potawatomi Community: $718,910
- Oneida Nation: $1,102,747
- Stockbridge Munsee Community: $372,700
The grants will be used to improve public safety, serve victims of crime, combat violence against women and support youth programs in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
“Violent crime and domestic abuse in American Indian and Alaska Native communities remain at unacceptably high levels, and they demand a response that is both clear and comprehensive,” said Attorney General William Barr. “We will continue to work closely with our tribal partners to guarantee they have the resources they need to curb violence and bring healing to the victims most profoundly affected by it.”
Nearly half of the $273.4 million comes from the Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation.
