APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – Winter is right around the corner, which means it’s a good time to brace for the colder weather here in Wisconsin.
“The time to be prepping for winter is not when it’s -30 degrees outside,” says Susan Bach of the Better Business Bureau.
Bach recommends having your home heating professionally checked.
“Have a trusted professional check the furnace, ensure the thermostat and other parts are working. Also, consider insulating your heating ducts,” says Bach.
The Department of Energy reports that centrally heated homes can lose up to 60% of warmed air before it reaches the vents if ductwork is poorly connected or not insulated. For those with a fireplace, it’s always recommended to have professionals check the chimney as well to remove any blockage or make repairs.
Bach also suggests taking a look at everything in your home. Whether it’s a creaky door, drafty window or a smoke detector, it’s a good time to make sure the house is sealed up tight.
“Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, replace the batteries. The detector units themselves should also be replaced every ten years.”
Preparing for the cold also includes protecting the exterior of a home and checking vehicles for any potential issues. Cleaning out gutters and ridge vents is important to avoid allowing rainwater to clog, freeze, or cause damage.
Bach also reminds everyone that “this is the best time to check your snowblower, make sure it’s prepped for the winter as well. Make sure that you have shovels, salt – and don’t forget to put all of the necessary equipment in your car as well.”
That equipment includes things like extra blankets and ice scrapers. Bach adds that while stocking the car is helpful, it’s even more important to make sure the vehicle is ready to handle the conditions.
She says to make sure “that you have enough tread left on those tires so it’s safe during winter driving, and also that they’re inflated properly.”
It’s also recommended to have a mechanic check fluid levels, including coolant, to make sure the vehicle is ready for the cold. Other basics, like replacing windshield wipers if needed and ensuring defrosters and heaters work properly, should also be considered.
