SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) – After more than a week, Highway 117 in Shawano County is once again open to traffic.
The portion of the highway located under the 117 bridge near Bonduel was closed after a vehicle hit it last week, causing significant damage.
While the highway is open, the trail above it is not.
Missy Vanlanduyt of the DNR says that it is because they had to remove the entire bridge.
“There is just open air above it and there are multiple points where the trail is blocked off so the trail is closed maybe three-quarters of a mile in each direction.”
She says the rest of the project is still being figured out.
“They took apart the bridge and put in on the adjacent trail surface,” Vanlanduyt said. “If we can reuse those elements, we would like to do that if at all possible.”
Vanlanduyt says it is important for people not to ignore barricades or road closure signs.
The trail over the highway would commonly be used for biking in the spring and summer and snowmobiling in the winter.
